1943: GERMANY. Nazi armaments maker General Motors tools up its Opel weapons plant in Russelsheim, Germany to produce jet engines and landing gear for the Nazis' revolutionary jet fighter/bomber, the Messerschmit ME 262, the world's first jet aircraft. One of the major factors limiting the impact of the startlingly advanced ME 262 is repeated failures of the GM-designed and built landing gear.
