Japan’s health ministry asked the companies that country’s national water purification is no longer using rain water and covered swimming-pool initial purification with tarps to protect these places from radioactive substances originating from the Fukushima nuclear power plant damaged by earthquake and tsunami.
Tokyo City Government and cities nearby a few weeks ago said they had detected a radioactive iodine that passes through the normal limit, making the tap water in Tokyo and the cities are not safe for infants. However, the level of contamination was later dropped again since then.
Japan’s Health Ministry warned last weekend that new rainfall could capture radioactive elements that have been separated from the damaged power plant in Fukushima, and flow of radioactive substances into rivers and reservoirs are then entered in the supply of drinking water.
“When the radioactive substance increased in Tokyo after the rains, the ministry has asked the national water purification company operator to take preventive measures that can be done,”said a ministry official told AFP on Monday (3/28/2011). These steps include stopping the supply of river water after rains and close the pool water with plastic sheeting.
The Ministry has stated that such actions are taken to the extent not destabilize the drinking water supply. The Ministry also advised the companies to use carbon powder substance in the purification process to reduce radioactive materials.
Japan Meteorological Agency predicts there will be snow or rain on Tuesday afternoon in Fukushima Prefecture, in which plants are problematic and in Ibaraki Prefecture, located nearby.
